Fun Things to See and Do Around the New York Campus

CIA Student Explores All the Fun Things to Do Off Campus in the Hudson Valley

Author Madeleine White ’29 is a Food Business Management major.

Students at CIA come from all over the world, yet I have noticed some trends in what students like to do for fun. First of all, most students love to cook, a shocking revelation when attending a culinary school. On the weekends many students visit Adams Fairacre Farms, a local grocery store that has such a large variety of fresh produce, cheese, and meat. A hot spot for students who want to make their dream dishes come true. Another grocery store favorite is Casa Latina, a local supermarket with a good selection of Hispanic groceries. If you come to visit CIA, that has to be on your list of places to visit!

The fun didn’t end there, I went and asked my fellow CIA students what spots they visit for a fun adventure or unwind time, as well as some of my personal favorites. Here is my comprehensive list of all the fun places to visit in the Hudson Valley (near CIA of course).

  • Roosevelt Farm Lane trail: Do you like hiking? So do I! However, sometimes I just want a relaxing walk in nature. If you feel the same way, this would be the spot for you.
  • Netherwood Acres: This family-owned farm offers horseback riding for all levels, making it a part of my to-do list. Personally, horses are a bit scary, but I believe all fears should be conquered!
  • Clover Brooke Llama and Alpaca Farm: If you want a beautiful mix of my first two suggestions, this is the spot for you. Hiking with llamas and alpacas! Or you could just take a tour of the farm, and pet some very cute animals.
  • Dinsmore Golf Course: There is a large community of golf lovers here on CIA’s campus, while I can’t relate it would be a disservice to not include it in my all-encompassing list.
  • Spins Bowl: My favorite memories from back home were bowling on a Friday night with my friends. Those memories don’t need to stop when you get to CIA. Invite your friends to Spins Bowl and remember a night full of strikes and gutter balls.
  • Eveready Diner: Not only because I work there, but I truly believe Eveready is a staple for CIA students. Only a three-minute drive up Route 9, Eveready has the traditional diner aesthetic and a menu full of everything you could imagine.
  • Rosticceria Rossi & Sons: The biggest sandwiches I have ever seen! Freshly made bread stuffed with cured meats and soft cheeses. Everything you imagine a New York sandwich store to be. Plus, a very cute store right next to the Hudson River.
