Dream It. Do It. One Student’s Magical Externship at Walt Disney World.

Author Annie B. Milostan ’25 Baking and Pastry Arts Major

Imagine stepping into the magical world of Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL, for your summer internship (or “externship,” as we like to call it in this industry). The moment you arrive; the air is filled with the sweet scent of churros and popcorn. You hear laughter and music from every corner as families create unforgettable memories. It’s like walking into a dream where you get to be part of something unforgettable. Hudson Parker, a baking and pastry arts student, was able to do just that, while talking to him about his externship I could truly tell it was something special.

Why did you choose this location? What factors did you consider when searching for your externship?

My location was at the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World, for me I chose this location because it was something I had wanted for a long time, and I felt that it could challenge me in the aspects of my career that I wasn’t great in.

Explain your responsibilities and how long a typical shift is.

For me I worked at all five restaurants on our property and my responsibilities varied day by day and my shifts length could depend on how much work needed to be done and if there were any special projects but usually a seven-hour shift with option of overtime.

What three words best describe your externship and why?

Fast, magic, and exciting. My days were never slow whether I was helping fill out a banquet or finishing 250 desserts for our fine dining restaurants, it was magical because well it’s the most magical place on earth, and it was exciting because I learned so much and met so many new people.

In what way do you think this externship is helping you in your career?

My externship really challenged my speed and efficiency and pushed me to be more precise and productive when working at a larger scale.

What advice do you have for students who are looking for an externship spot?

Do your research, ask questions and talk to people who were there before you and try and branch out. Don’t just go home cause it’s cheaper or you want to be near family, really dig in and find somewhere that will challenge and turn you into something great!
