The Egg versus Farquharson Hall
Author Madeleine White ’29 is a Food Business Management major.
As expected, there are a lot of places to eat at CIA: Apple Pie Bakery Cafe, Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici, The Bocuse Restaurant, and American Bounty, are some of the restaurants we have on campus. Yet students are mainly found in The Egg or Farquharson (Farq) Hall, formerly the Jesuits’ chapel that was renovated by the same company that redesigned Grand Central Station and Radio City Music Hall, now a student dining hall.
So here are the differences between the two!
The Egg:
- Connected to the gym and Student Recreational Center.
- Open while the school is open.
- Music and activities are often held here, my favorite being karaoke night.
- Student-made meals during mealtimes, but also ready-made meals like sandwiches, burgers, pizza, and the salad bar are open all day.
- “The Yolk” has a barista station and the best breakfast sandwiches available all day.
Farquharson Hall:
- Plates are inspired by so many different cultures.
- Food is made by later semester students, who have spent more time perfecting their skills.
- Located in the main building, Roth Hall. Closer to most academic classes.
- Students can choose between different cuisines, like Mediterranean or Asian, then eat in Farq Hall, as the students call it.
- Only open during specific times, as posted on a screen in the hallways.
Any CIA student you ask will say they eat at both The Egg and Farq Hall, yet they may have a favorite. These options allow you to eat no matter what your class schedule and allow you to try new food. Which is crucial at a culinary school!
