Singapore – Andrew Tjioe, president of the Restaurant
Association of Singapore and executive chairman of Tung Lok
Restaurants, Ltd., delivered the commencement address to graduates of The Culinary Institute of America in September. Mr. Tjioe advised bachelor’s degree
recipients that their outlook on life will help define their success.
“Learn from every mistake. Your heart can be broken when you
fail, but don’t let your spirit be beaten,” said Mr. Tjioe,
whose Singapore-based company now owns, manages, and franchises more than 40
restaurants throughout Asia. “If you keep being positive about everything, your
life will be full of positive energy. If you aspire to change the society you
live in, then you will live the life of a social activist.”
A restaurateur with 35 years of experience, Mr. Tjioe has earned many career honors, including the Ernst
& Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and both the regional Restaurateur
of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the World Gourmet Summit
Awards of Excellence. He also received the International Star Lifetime
Achievement Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences and twice
earned Wine & Dine magazine’s
Singapore Restaurateur of the Year Award.
These graduates began their CIA studies in 2013 after
completing a three-year diploma program in partnership with the Singapore
Institute of Technology. Credits from previous business management courses
transferred, allowing students to complete their four-year degree with two
years of the CIA’s unparalleled
hands-on culinary training and certain required liberal arts courses.
