    Welcome to the CIA
    Mise En Place—Success Right From the Start

    During your time at the CIA, you will learn the life-changing power of mise en place to assist you with organizing your education, your life, and your mind. Mise en place is a French culinary phrase which means “putting in place” or “everything in its place.” Below are sample schedules of the sessions for both students and parents.

    New Student Orientation

  • Business Casual Dress

    9–11:30 a.m.—For Residential Students Only (casual dress): Move in
    11:45 a.m.—Check in, Berns Hospitality Area, Main building, 1st floor
    Noon–12:45 p.m.—Buffet lunch. Parents and commuter students welcome. Student Dining Services, Main building, 2nd floor
    1–2:30 p.m.—Personal Mise en Place: Ecolab Theater, Main building, 1st floor
     • Student ID for students with last names A–H (Must bring a photo ID, driver’s license, passport, etc.), Ventura Center stage, Main building, 3rd floor south
     • Student Financial Planning open appointments: Education Office, Main building, 3rd floor south
     • Package pick up: Rudd Center, 1st floor package room
     • Pre-ordered uniform distribution: Rudd Center, 1st floor package room
     • Parking permits (all vehicles): Campus Services, Main building, atrium desk

    5:15–5:30 p.m.—Chef’s Uniform Tips: A primer for Day One, Ecolab Theater, Main building, 1st floor
    5:30–6 p.m.—Group Meeting for homework assignment, Ventura Center Common Area and classrooms
    6–6:30 p.m.—Dinner (optional): Teaching Kitchen, Main Building, 3rd floor
    7–8 p.m.—For Residential Students Only: Mise en Place for Living in CIA Housing, Ecolab Theater, Main building, 1st floor

    2:30–3:15 p.m.—Celebration of the Toque (parents/family members are encouraged to attend): Ecolab Theater, Main Building, 1st floor
    3:15 p.m.—Free Time: Please take this time to walk around campus, visit the college bookstore, take photos, say goodbye to your parents/family members, etc.

     • Transitioning from Dreams to Reality: The Center for Career and Academic Advising staff discuss the transition to academic life at the CIA and the career opportunities that lie ahead
     • Succeeding at the CIA…and Beyond: Our faculty leaders discuss faculty expectations, balancing classwork and social life and the variety of learning opportunities available
     • Learning Strategies for Success: Learning Strategies staff covers services to help you succeed academically
    10:15 a.m.–Noon—Campus Life Mise en Place: Ecolab Theater, 1st floor
     • Supporting Your Success: A representative from the Counseling & Psychological Services reviews programs that help you manage personal challenges and succeed at the college
     • Working at the CIA: Student employment staff will explain the hiring process and various opportunities to work on campus
     • Logging In to the CIA: IT staff familiarize you on how to navigate the student web portal, your CIA e-mail account, and the online course management system to keep you on track
     • Ensuring a Safe Campus for Everyone: A representative from Campus Safety reviews policies and procedures that will make your stay at the CIA a productive, enjoyable, and safe experience

    1–1:45 p.m.—Your Class Schedule and Student Financial Planning: Ecolab Theater, 1st floor
     • Learn about your class schedule and get an overview of the offerings provided by the Student Financial & Registration Services and the Registrar’s Office
    1:45–2 p.m.—Your Dining Options: Ecolab Theater, 1st floor
     • Dining Services staff members discuss student meal service, dining in the Teaching Kitchen and answer your questions
    2–4 p.m.—Student ID for students with last names N–Z (Must bring a photo ID, driver’s license, passport, etc.), Ventura Center stage, Main building, 3rd floor south
    2:15–3:45 p.m.—Assessment Test: Ecolab Theater, 1st floor
     • For challenge-exam students: please bring #2 pencils and a calculator
    4–5 p.m.—For International Students Only: Welcome & Information Session: Education Conference Room, Education Office, 3rd floor south

    10 a.m.–4 p.m.—Optional Activity, Tour of Napa Valley: Getting to know your new home in St. Helena, Calistoga and Napa. Sign up on the student web portal to reserve your space.

     • An interactive discussion for parents to explore key issues and concerns with sending your student to college
    3:45–4 p.m.—Break and transition to next session
    4–5 p.m.—We’re Glad You’re Here: Student/Parent/Family Presentation, Ecolab Theater, Main building, 1st floor
    5 p.m.—Say good bye to students; parent/family program concludes for the day

    Business Casual Dress

    1:15–2:30 p.m.—Welcome to the CIA at Greystone presented by campus leadership, Ecolab Theater, Main building, 1st floor
     • Parents/family are encouraged to attend this session with their student
    2:30–3:15 p.m.—Celebration of the Toque, Ecolab Theater, main building, 1st floor
     • Join us in celebration as we welcome new students to the CIA family by presenting them with a chef’s hat (toque).
    3:15 p.m.—Free Time; program concludes
     • Please use this time to take photos, walk around campus, visit the campus store and say goodbye to your student.
