Student-Brewed Belgian-style Tripel Carries on a Winning Tradition
Hyde Park, NY, April 1, 2022 – CIA’s brewery, an educational craft brewery at the Culinary Institute of America, had a pitcher perfect finish at the New York Craft Beer Competition, taking home a silver medal in the Belgian Other (Trappist, Strong, etc.) category for its Class Project Father Murphy’s Tripel. The beer, created by the Fall 2021 Art and Science of Brewing class, pours with a dark gold color, and is bursting with notes of robust candied fruit, banana, and spices. It competed against 48 other beers in the category.
The New York State Craft Beer Competition, hosted by the New York State Brewers Association and Raise a Glass Foundation, is the largest state level competition in the country, this year 1,264 entries from 185 breweries were judged in 29 categories by over 50 qualified industry professionals.
CIA’s brewery is primarily a classroom where bachelor’s-level students learn about the ingredients, equipment, and techniques required to produce ales and lagers. It was created in 2015 in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery, whose brewers and business executives often serve as guest lecturers. The class helps future food professionals think differently about beer, elevating its status as a fine beverage on a level with wine.
“We are honored to win a silver medal for our Class Project Father Murphy’s Tripel at the New York State Craft Beer Competition,” Says Hutch Kugeman, head brewer at CIA’s brewery, who teaches Art and Science of Brewing along with Professor John Fischer, “Craft beer keeps getting better and better each year, it’s gratifying that our students are recognized by professional brewers and judges to be among the best in New York.”
CIA’s brewery is no stranger to wins at the competition. In 2019, it was named New York State Brewery of the Year and took home gold medals for its Mise en Place Wit, which also won silver last year, its 2019 Class Project Br-Br-Br-Brown won gold, and in 2021 Equinox Amber Lager won a bronze. New York State residents can order CIA beer. Learn more about CIA’s brewery or place an order online.
