COMPASS®

To make sure you start off on the right foot—and in the right class—the CIA requires all admitted students to take math, reading, and writing assessment tests through COMPASS®. These tests will determine your first classes so you can begin your studies confident that your education will meet your needs.

You may be excused from one or more assessments if you have:

  • completed the SATs within the last five years with Critical Reading and/or Math scores of "500" or better and reported your official test scores to the CIA.
  • completed the ACTs within in the last five years with English and/or Math scores of "19" or higher and reported your official test scores to the CIA.
  • successfully completed an English Composition or Culinary Mathematics course with a grade of "C" or better at an accredited college or university within the past 10 years (you must submit the Transfer Credit Request form in order to qualify for transfer credit).
  • received a score of "4" or higher on the AP English Language for Writing test and report your official test scores to the CIA.

Learn more about the tests and see sample questions. You will take the following three exams: Numerical Skills/Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Reading, and Writing Skills.
